Investor Visa Tiers and Long-Stay Routes in a Fast-Growing Market
Vietnam's long-stay routes are tied to investment, employment or family rather than passive income. Residence rights scale with the capital you commit: the law sets four investor tiers, and the residence card attached to each is what determines how long you may stay. Permanent residence exists, but it is deliberately narrow.
Key Highlights
- ✓ Investor tiers, set by registered capital: ĐT1 from VND 100 billion, or investment in a government-designated priority sector or area, carrying a temporary residence card of up to 10 years; ĐT2 from VND 50 billion to under 100 billion, up to 5 years; ĐT3 from VND 3 billion to under 50 billion, up to 3 years; ĐT4 under VND 3 billion, which carries a visa of up to 12 months and no residence card.
- ✓ E-visa: valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, applied for online through the national immigration portal before you travel.
- ✓ Working in Vietnam: employment runs through a work permit and an LĐ1 or LĐ2 visa, with a temporary residence card of up to two years, renewable.
- ✓ Permanent residence is narrow: four categories qualify — people honoured by the State for their contribution to Vietnam; scientists and experts already resident; people sponsored by a parent, spouse or child who is a Vietnamese citizen; and stateless people continuously resident since before 2000. Applicants must show lawful accommodation and stable income, the family-sponsored category requires at least three continuous years of temporary residence, and the decision rests with the Minister of Public Security, normally within four months.
- ✓ Citizenship: Vietnam applies a single-nationality principle, so naturalisation ordinarily means giving up your existing nationality. Amendments in force since 1 July 2025 relax this for investors, scientists, experts and those who have made outstanding contributions, who may be exempted from residence, language and self-sufficiency conditions and may keep their foreign nationality with the President's approval.
- ✓ The widely reported "golden visa" is not law: a ten-year golden visa and a talent visa were proposed in 2025 and are described as launched by many visa websites, but no legislation has been enacted. The routes above are what exists today.
Vietnam suits investors and skilled professionals building something on the ground rather than retirees looking for a passive-income visa. The investor tiers are transparent and the entry cost is low by regional standards, but long-term security comes from renewing the residence card rather than from a quick route to permanent residence.
